Groups With Near-Certain Winners: Argentina, Spain, England
Some groups are settled before the first ball is kicked.
Argentina in Group J face Austria, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia. Under Rangnick, Austria are genuinely competitive and will not sit off Argentina — but Argentina are the defending world champions with arguably the best player in tournament history still near his peak. Barring a catastrophic injury to key players, they win this group.
Spain in Group G draw Uruguay, one strong opponent, plus two more manageable sides. Spain's possession-based system is ideally suited to the 12-group format — they don't chase games, they control them, which limits the risk of conceding in transition. They should top Group G with relative comfort.
England in Group L have Croatia, then two more accessible opponents. England have outgrown Croatia in terms of squad quality since 2018. The risk is complacency rather than genuine tactical defeat. Under a well-structured setup, Group L should be managed.
